(WLUK) -- Boaters beware: A gale watch has been issued for Lake Michigan.

The National Weather Service says the watch includes the section of Green Bay north of Sturgeon Bay. A gale watch is issued when the risk of gale-force winds of 39-54 mph has significantly increased.

The U.S. Coast Guard says those visiting the lake should be careful. The Coast Guard also advises people stay off rocks, jetties and piers since high waves and heavy surrf can sweep a person into the water.

The gale watch ends Saturday night, but the Coast Guard says it may take an additional day for lake conditions to calm.
