Packers look to develop young talent at minicamp
GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- The Packers excused 16 veteran players from this week's minicamp practices.
The focus of the last leg of the off season program is to get younger players more reps.
"It gives us a chance to review things and make sure the foundation is in place for the young guys," said head coach Mike McCarthy. "The fact of the matter is when we get back here for training camp we're not going to instruction as far as the basics. That needs to be ingrained, because put the pads on and take steps getting ready for the upcoming season."
"The guys that are here now with those select vet guys out, they're getting double the reps that they were before and it's a chance to show themselves," said offensive lineman Jason Spriggs.
The two oldest Packers at minicamp are Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Davante Adams who remember just how important this week was they tried to establish themselves on this team as a rookie four years ago.
"When I was a rookie it was huge, I took full advantage of it," said Adams. "I feel like it was my time to do as much as I can and get in there with some of the starting guys."
"You get a lot more reps than usual than you do when the vets are here and basically you become the ones," said Clinton-Dix. "The young guys are getting a lot of reps with the ones right now and it will definitely benefit them in the future."
Aaron Rodgers is one of the players excused from this year's minicamp, so that means more repetitions for Brett Hundley and DeShone Kizer as they try and get on the same page as these younger wide receivers.
"Aaron's not here so you have to have a relationship with all your quarterbacks, you got to work on timing with all your quarterbacks because you never know, it's a dangerous sport so you want to have a relationship with everybody," said wide receiver J'Mon Moore. "It's great to have them here and work on that timing and get reps with them, because they are our quarterbacks too and they'll be in the game at some time so it's good to have good timing with everybody."
Minicamp practices finish this Thursday and Training Camp practices begin July 26th.
