GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- The Green Bay Packers have given the New York Jets permission to speak with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and would honor a trade if Rodgers requests one.
Team president/CEO Mark Murphy confirmed the news during an interview on the live broadcast of the WIAA state girls basketball tournament Friday. The tournament airs live on WCWF CW 14 and streams on fox11online.com.
Reports came out earlier this week that the Jets flew to California Tuesday to meet with Rodgers.
"We're really hopeful that we can reach a resolution that works not only for Aaron but for us," Murphy said.
Murphy was asked if there was a scenario where Rodgers could return as the team's starting quarterback next season.
"Yeah, I mean if things don't work out the way we would want them yeah," Murphy said. "He's obviously a great player and four-time MVP but you know, I think it's trying to find what he wants and what we want and hopefully we can find a win-win situation."
Murphy said he did believe retirement is still a possible option for Rodgers.
Murphy said they are hoping the situation will be resolved by the start of free agency, which opens on Wednesday.
