(WLUK) -- A 13-year-old boy speared a sturgeon opening day thanks to help from his grandfather.

The DNR says John Woods transferred his Upriver Lakes permit to his grandson Alex Woods.

"The paper work (sic) was sent in on January 1, 2018 and John passed away on January 8," Ryan Koenigs, a senior fisheries biologist with the DNR said in a press release Saturday.

The DNR says a spearer who is awarded an Upriver Lakes spearing permit can transfer their tag to a youth spearer ages 12-17.

Alex Woods speared a 47 pound, 56 inch sturgeon opening day.

"I think I can safely say that Alex would have made his grandfather proud," Koenigs said.
