Gierczak powers Notre Dame past Southwest, 75-49

GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- It didn't take long Tuesday night to see what direction the game between Notre Dame and Green Bay Southwest was headed.

Kaycee Gierczak scored 10 quick points inside as the Tritons scored the game's first 14 points. From there, Gierczak and the Tritons cruised to a dominant win over the Trojans, 75-49, in a Fox River Classic Conference game.

Gierczak scored 31 points and fellow senior Maddy Reitz added 20, with most of her damage also coming inside.

"We knew we had a height advantage against them," Notre Dame coach Sara Rohde said. "We talked to the girls about getting the ball inside. We thought we had some mismatches whether it was Kaycee, Maddy, Lizzie (Opichka), Peighton (Milton), a lot of our guards for that matter.

"I thought our girls did a nice job of looking inside and getting easy baskets."

While Gierczak and Reitz dominated inside, the Tritons' defense wasn't too shabby either. Notre Dame held sophomore Jaddan Simmons (14 points) to 10 points below her average as Notre Dame hardly ever allowed her to get loose. With Simmons held in check, Southwest didn't have an answer.

"We obviously talked about defense," Rohde said. "I thought our girls did an excellent job of executing the plan defensively and that converted to us offensively."

Notre Dame (6-1, 4-0), ranked No. 4 in the FOX 11 Top 11, is the only perfect team in the FRCC. The Tritons have a mix of experienced seniors to go along with some young, promising players and the start of the season has been pretty good.

"We have six seniors, we have a lot of experience," Rohde said. "I've known these girls since eighth grade; they've been involved in the program for a long time. It's nice to see them have this success early on and hopefully that continues."
