Vikings confident ahead of first MWC tournament appearance since 1990
APPLETON (WLUK) -- For the first time in 28 years, Lawrence University baseball is headed to the postseason.
“This first step has been really hard. I’ve been here ten years and this was the first goal and to finally achieve it, it’s exciting,” said Vikings head coach Jason Anderson.
Lawrence clinched its berth to the Midwest Conference Tournament on Sunday in dramatic fashion. Down 4-1 to Beloit College with two outs in the ninth inning, Lawrence rallied to a 5-4 victory in extra innings.
"We’re battle-tested now, we know how to come back in big games we know how to play in big games," said senior catcher Travis Weber. "I think we’re ready to go. I think we believe in ourselves. I think in the past we’ve expected to lose, now I think we expect to win every game.”
"We want to win and that’s what we’ve shown this year," said senior outfielder/pitcher Zach Rabideau. "We’ve won and it has really progressed from the five wins we had last year.”
Lawrence improved to 15-19 in 2018 after going 5-29-1 in 2017.
"This group has a natural tendency to work really hard," said Anderson. "I just keep telling them, guys you’ve already done the hard work, now just go out and be yourselves and play the game because it’s supposed to be fun.”
Lawrence draws the Midwest Conference South Division Champion Monmouth College in game one Friday. The Vikings met the Scots April 22nd and lost 14-3 in 7 innings.
"We fully expect to go in there and play and compete. We think we can win this tournament," said Weber. "We're a close-knit group, we're all best friends, we hang out with each other all the time, do everything together. We're ready to go."
"Monmouth beat us pretty bad earlier in the season, so we know that they kind of look down on us a little bit and we're ready to step in and do a job," said senior pitcher Chris Shaw. "It's kind of like a so what, we're on to the next one already."
Lawrence is trying for its first conference championship since 1980 when it shared the title with Monmouth.
