Titans' Mentkowski sprinting towards NFL dream
WAUKESHA (WLUK) -- To play in the National Football League you have to be willing to raise the bar. Especially, when you're making the jump from the Division III football ranks.
"It doesn't happen very often, just blessed to be here," University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh wide receiver Sam Mentkowski said. "Get the opportunity and going to make the most of it."
The 6-foot-1, 196-pound speedster is hoping to join fellow UWO alums Joe Sommers and Zach Kasuboski as players who've earned NFL deals.
"It'd be crazy to get drafted," Mentkowski said. Division III guys don't get drafted often, there's definitely a shot but I'm looking more as an undrafted free agent."
The Greenfield, Wisconsin native is the Titans' all-time receiving leader in yards, catches and touchdowns.
However, it was his impressive showing at Wisconsin's Pro Day, running a 4.41 40-yard dash which truly turned heads.
"I've always been fast but I get sneaky fast a lot and I've always hated that my whole life," Mentkowski said. "I knew I could do it. Running that 4.4 definitely put me on the map."
"He's got the measurables, he's got speed, he's got deceleration properties, he's got good hands," fitness coach and NX Level Sports Performance owner Brad Arnett said. "He just needs an opportunity to showcase I belong here."
The Whitnall graduate would love nothing more than to play for his home state team.
"That would be a dream come true growing up a (Green Bay) Packers fan," Mentkowski said.
Even if he doesn't get a call from Titletown, the wide out is ready for an opportunity to prove he can burn the competition on any given Sunday.
"Talking to teams, my agent is talking to teams," Mentkowski said. "Excited to see what happens Saturday."
