DE PERE (WLUK) -- The St. Norbert College women's basketball team will not play for the next ten games after the school says a number of its players violated school polices stemming from an on-campus alcohol-related incident.

The suspension of the involved players starts immediately and runs through Jan. 24, school officials say.

“The health and wellness of our student body is of paramount importance,” Rev. Jay Fostner, St. Norbert College Vice President of Mission and Student Affairs said. “We have high expectations of our student-athletes and our students in general.”

This also means the team is ineligible for the Midwest Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

"Our young students are still struggling to understand the extreme dangers that happens with underage drinking, over consumption and so we as a school, we had to use this as a learning opportunity for the players. While basketball is hugely important, it's just more important that they understand what can happen with the potential of over consumption," Rev. Fostner added.

Staff says the team will continue to practice prior to resuming its season on Jan. 27 at Cornell College in Iowa.
