2OT win sends SNC to national title game

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - In a wild national semifinal game, the St. Norbert College men's hockey team UMass-Boston, 8-7 in double overtime Friday night.

The Green Knights will face UW-Stevens Point - which handily defeated SUNY-Geneseo 5-1 in the first semifinal - Saturday night at Herb Brooks Arena for the title.

It was a game of scoring streaks.

The Beacons scored twice in the game's opening minutes, chasing starting Green Knight goalie Tony Kujava less than three minutes into the game. UMB added another goal against T.J. Black to make it 3-0 not even midway through the first period.

SNC scored with .7 left in the first period, making it a 3-1.

The Green Knights then scored six more unanswered goals in the second period, taking a 7-3 lead into the final stanza.

UMB added a goal to make it 7-4. Then, after a break to accomodate an injured linesman, the Beacons closed the game with three more goals in the last ten minutes, sending it to overtime at 7-7.

After a scoreless first overtime, SNC junior Noah Nelson got a breakaway and beat the Beacons' goalie for the win, at 3:49 of the fifth period.

Of the 15 combined goals scored, only were scored on one end of the ice - arguably the most important two for SNC: the goal right at the end of the first period, and the game winner.

St. Norbert defeated UWSP 3-1 in 2014 - the most recent of the Green Knights' four NCAA titles,
