GREEN BAY, Wis. (WLUK) -- An area nonprofit has reached a milestone in its quest to supply Northeast Wisconsin with a popular species of fish.
The Farmory in Green Bay has seen its first hatch of yellow perch fingerlings in its indoor fish hatchery. The Farmory hopes to sell the fingerlings to help entrepreneurs start aquaculture businesses, as well as to backyard growers.
The Farmory also plans to host a series of educational webinars featuring experts in aquaculture and aquaponics.
The Farmory decided to being raising yellow perch to combat the species' decline in commercial fisheries, most notably Lake Michigan. The species is a popular centerpiece of the traditional Wisconsin Friday night fish fry.
More information on buying fingerlings and the webinar series is available on the Farmory's website.
