What to expect for Packers Kickoff Weekend Concert
GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- The Packers home opener is always a big weekend for the area, but this year, the team is adding to the excitement with a free concert on Saturday, the day before the game against the Seattle Seahawks.
“Brand new event, we're expecting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 people,” said Commander Paul Ebel of the Green Bay Police Department.
The concert will be in the parking lot on the east side of Lambeau Field. The stage will be setup on the south end and will accommodate spectators between the stage and the new Johnsonville Tailgate Village.
“People who want to come to the concert can bring in chairs or blankets or something you might bring to the park to catch a concert in the park, that sort of thing,” said Aaron Popkey, the Packers’ director of public affairs.
The Johnsonville Tailgate Village will open at 3 p.m. The concert will start at 5 and is expected to last until 9. Blues Traveler and Everclear are performing.
Carry-in food and drinks won't be allowed, but will be available to purchase.
Popkey says the team had been considering a kickoff weekend concert for a couple of years.
“We know a lot of people are in town for the game, people from the area are excited about the game and want to have a lot of stuff to do for the weekend,” said Popkey. “This is another part of it.”
Down the street from Lambeau, Stadium View Bar and Grill is partnering with Menominee Casino to throw a concert at the same time as the Packers. It is also free, but donations will be collected to help Hurricane Harvey victims.
“I've been doing something outside on Saturday for 25 years,” said Jerry Watson, the owner of Stadium View Bar and Grill. “I sure wouldn't stop just because the Packers are doing something outside.”
Watson says he expects football fans to enjoy everything the area has to offer this weekend.
“There is always enough business for everybody down here,” said Watson.
Stadium View’s concert starts at 3 p.m. and is scheduled to last until 11 p.m. Acoustic Mayhem, Jamus Unplugged, Big Scuba Duo, and 5 Card Studs are all scheduled to play.
