Home sweet dome: UW Oshkosh Rec Plex dome goes up
OSHKOSH (WLUK) -- The Rec Plex South Field re-opened Friday at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh with a new look and feel.
“I’ve had a lot of people, like mention to me, it looks like a huge pillow or marshmallow on our campus,” said student Cassie Renforth, who plays on the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team at the university.
It isn’t a huge pillow or marshmallow, though. It's an inflatable and heated dome.
“The ability to have an indoor playing space this size from November through May, and then still have recreation fields in the summer and spring is a huge benefit,” said Nathan Scott, UWO Director of Student Recreation and Wellness.
The dome lets UWO students use the new outdoor intramural fields all year.
“It’s going to be a great opportunity for, especially the winter sports or intramurals; for people in the off-season to get some time on fields that they probably wouldn’t get normally.” said UWO Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team player Olivia Schilcher.
Normally, the frisbee team would be playing outside in the cold, or in a small gym, but now they have the luxury of a warm, heated dome.
“We can practice in here, and it’s like a nice area for us to practice in shorts and a T-shirt,” Renforth said.
Heat is just one thing the old intramural field at East Hall Field didn't offer.
“There was no lighting, no plumbing, so there were no restrooms,” said Scott.
The new facility has all of that, including synthetic turf.
It's also in a more centralized location on campus; making it feel more like “home sweet dome” for UWO students.
Installation on the dome started in late October.
The $7 million project was funded mostly by student fees.
It's also available for the community to rent out.
