MILWAUKEE (WLUK) – A suspect in a Romanian credit card skimming ring was convicted in federal court of identity theft.
Ionel Moresanu was found guilty by a jury Tuesday of four counts of aggravated identity theft. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 13, according to court records.
According to the indictment, Moresanu, 18, was one of several who made unauthorized withdrawals in several states, including Wisconsin.
In Oshkosh, police officers observed several men repeatedly using a convenience store ATM. Moresanu fled but was captured. Police found 80 counterfeit access devices on him. He admitted to stealing card information and using it to make repeated withdrawals, according to court documents.
Other Romanian men allegedly part of similar schemes face charges in state court in Fond du Lac. Mihai-Alexandru Preda has pleaded not guilty to 40 charges, but no trial date has been set. Catalin-Adrian Capanu enters a plea next week to 41 counts.
