APPLETON (WLUK) -- Even in the pouring rain, fallen military members in Appleton were remembered and honored on Thursday.
Cub scouts and the Boy Scouts of America placed around 4,000 flags Thursday at Highland Memorial Park.
Organization leaders say it is important to do events like this for the kids to help them remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
"Well, they have served our country, and we are free because of them," Bay Lakes Council District Executive Jason Splinter said. "And we want to make sure we honor them appropriately with flags. And Memorial Day is coming up on Monday, and 4,000 flags are getting out there today. So that's really great remembrance of the veterans."
Splinter says Thursday's flag placing is an unofficial start of the scouts' summer of service, where they help with community projects and community service in Appleton.
