GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Local students learned a tiny hat can go a long way.

Red Smith Elementary School students collected and knitted red hats to be donated to babies born at local hospitals in February.

It's part of the Little Hats, Big Hearts initiative from the American Heart Association to raise awareness of congenital heart defects.

The American Heart Association says congenital heart defects are the most common form of birth defect among newborns. The organization says more than 40,000 babies are born with a congenital heart defect each year.
