STURGEON BAY (WLUK) -- A nearly 90-year-old tower in Door County has been permanently closed due to unsafe conditions.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it discovered significant wood decay on the observation tower at Potawatomi State Park in Sturgeon Bay.

The 75-foot tower has been closed to the public since December for the winter season and will not reopen for spring.

Officials say at this time, there are no plans to replace the tower but it could revisit the matter in the future.

"This is a difficult decision for us because we know how much our visitors enjoy climbing this tower for its panoramic views of Sawyer Harbor, Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay, but public safety is always our number one concern," said Ben Bergey, director of the Wisconsin State Park System.

Officials say they will begin the deconstruction process immediately.

A similar tower located in Peninsula State Park was taken down in 2016 after officials found wood decay. Plans to rebuild Eagle Tower are in place.
