MANITOWOC (WLUK) -- One person is dead after an officer involved shooting in Manitowoc.
Police say an officer and the Manitowoc Fire Department were responding to a fire alarm at the 1500 block of South 35th Street early Sunday morning.
"I only heard the last two or three," said neighbor Miranda Hansen. "I barely was just awake, and to me it sounded like firecrackers."
Officials say a male, armed with a blunt instrument, walked up and confronted the officer.
That's when police say the officer fired his weapon.
The male was pronounced dead at the scene.
Multiple neighbors told FOX 11 that they heard upwards of five gun shots followed by sirens.
Police say the incident is not related to the double homicide that happened in Manitowoc last week.
Residents of the Northwinds Apartments were not allowed to drive into the parking lot this afternoon and those leaving had to show their ID to police.
Neighbors leaving the apartment building were visibly upset.
"I'm like shaky, it's scary," said Hansen. "This is literally right in front of my home where I have two children."
She took her children to go stay with family because she didn't want to be near the scene.
"Incidents do happen here. But it's nothing like where someone is getting shot," said Hansen.
Officials have not yet identified the male.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
