The case is the subject of Netflix's series "Making a Murderer."

On Halloween 2005, freelance photographer Teresa Halbach of Calumet County disappeared. Days later, authorities say they found her remains as well as her vehicle on property in Manitowoc County owned by the family of Steven Avery. Avery had previously spent 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. He was released in 2003 after DNA evidence exonerated him.

Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were convicted in 2007 of killing Halbach.
