STURGEON BAY (WLUK) -- Fundraising efforts continue to construct a 10-story museum tower and expand the Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay.

The Door County Maritime Museum & Lighthouse Preservation Society says they are a quarter of the way to their fundraising goal of $4.3 million.

The fundraising campaign currently has half of what is needed to start construction.

The tower will feature an elevator ride to a enclosed observation deck with a 360-degree view of Sturgeon Bay.

A new larger floor plan design for the museum will increase retail space, allow for bigger tour groups and expand conference and meeting spaces for private parties and receptions.

“We are preparing for the future of the Door County Maritime Museum,” explains Bill Harder, president of the museum’s board of directors. “A key objective will be to make a visit to the museum not only memorable for the artifacts and displays, but also as an eye-opening educational experience. This project will propel the museum towards 21st century modernization, joining the growing trend among museums across the country. An extensive use of highly interactive electronic displays will be especially appealing to children and families to encourage imagination, enhance discovery and stimulate minds, young and old.”

Officials say they plan to break ground on the project in April of 2017.
