Aluminum Christmas trees on display in Manitowoc
A new holiday display in downtown Manitowoc is highlighting the city's shiny history.
"This is pretty cool because the trees were made here at one time," said Jim Vogel, owner of Dr. Freud's.
The inside of Vogel's store is filled with vintage records and now vintage is also displayed on the outside of his store.
In his store's window there is a small vintage aluminum Christmas tree, which is bringing a piece of Manitowoc's history out of the shadows.
"I think maybe now people will come and say, 'Oh you have one of those' or 'isn't it cool' that everyone put these in their windows," said Vogel.
More than 35 downtown storefronts are displaying the aluminum trees as part of "Evergleams on Eighth."
40 different sizes, styles and colors of the trees returned home to the city where they were originally manufactured over 50 years ago.
"It's a big part of the Manitowoc history that many of the young people don't know about," said Cathy Karl, with the Manitowoc City Center Association.
Karl said the trees were popular in the 1960's. She also said no two storefronts are the same.
"Some also include the color wheel that was popular at the time and also the revolving stand that was put on there to help make the tree sparkle," said Karl.
The trees will be on display until January 3, 2016.Click here to learn more about Evergleams on Eighth
