Kewaunee Co. Board approves manure application restrictions
KEWAUNEE (WLUK) -- In an effort to protect groundwater quality, the Kewaunee County Board unanimously approved manure application restrictions.
The county board adopted the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' NR 151 as part of the county's Chapter 39 Ordinance.
The ordinance prohibits manure to be spread in areas of Silurian dolomite with depth to bedrock of 20 feet or less.
In 2017 the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service released data showing more than half of the wells in the county were contaminated with high levels of nitrate from septic tanks and manure.
