Kaukauna student uses 3D printer to create puppy prosthetic
KAUKAUNA (WLUK) -- A Kaukauna High School student's engineering project is making a difference in the life of a puppy.
Senior Ben Brochtrup's engineering teacher had tasked his students with designing an assisting device for someone with a disability.
Brochtrup decided to create a prosthetic leg for Grey, a puppy with one leg significantly shorter than the others.
Using a 3D printer, Brochtrup designed the 20-piece prosthetic leg to work with Grey's existing elbow joint, allowing for more natural range of motion. The device is also able to extend sizes as the puppy continues to grow.
For his work on the project, Brochtrup earned an honorable mention in the Hackaday "Repairs You Can Print" contest.
A third fitting for Grey's prosthetic leg is planned for Friday.
