GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- After more than 50 years of family fun, the Saint Mary's of the Angels Roller Rink in Green Bay is shutting down.

The rink, located at St. Thomas More School, 1265 Cass St., Green Bay, was closed for the summer and had planned to reopen in October. Word of its permanent closing is catching many off guard.

The announcement of the closing came quietly with a post on the St. Mary’s Roller Rink Facebook page and website.

It says Roller Rink Management and Parish Leadership made the decision together this week to close the doors of St. Mary's Roller Rink indefinitely.

The statement indicates that many factors, mainly insurance related, were involved in the decision to close.

On Facebook hundreds of people are reacting to the closing. Many are remembering the good times. Shelly Mae writing...thank you for all the fond memories, you will be missed.

Adam added...there goes one of our favorite childhood places to go.

The rink had been an institution in the Green Bay area, opening in the late 1950s. It closed in 2004, but reopened, and celebrated its 50th year in 2009. This video was made to mark the five-decade anniversary, narrated by Steve Webster the rink manager.

“It was a huge thing for the community. We had a lot of people who skated here in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s...and now they bring their children here,” said Webster back in 2009.

The rink held open skating sessions and private parties. Volunteers ran the rink and money raised went to Saint Mary’s of the Angels.

Many of those just hearing about the closing are simply expressing disbelief like Danielle who posted.... “Nooooooo.”
