(WLUK) -- Two area fire departments will be hanging green wreaths up -- hoping they won't turn red.

Appleton and Green Bay fire departments are taking part in "Keep the Wreath Green" campaign.

The campaign is designed to promote fire safety and reduce the number of fires during the holiday season.

Crews will hang a wreath, with green bulbs, at each fire station. For every commercial or residential fire that occurs, a green bulb will be replaced with a red one.

According to Appleton Fire Department, they had five red bulbs in 2016. The fewest number of red bulbs for Appleton was in 2011, with just one.

The Green Bay Fire Department is reminding residents to never leave candles unattended, keep your real Christmas tree well watered, keep a safe distance around portable and fixed heating units and pay close attention when cooking meals.

The campaign starts this week and runs through New Year's Day.
