APPLETON (WLUK) -- Vietnam veteran Jerry Monson of Appleton got a belated Veterans Day surprise - an American flag that flew over the state Capitol in Madison on Veterans Day.

State Sen. Roger Roth, R-Appleton, presented the flag to Monson at his Appleton home on Wednesday morning.

The gift is just the latest received by Monson through an outpouring of community support for the 70-year-old veteran.

FOX 11 Investigates profiled Monson in 2014, highlighting how crews from a state program trying make his mobile home more energy efficient actually created more problems. Damage to the home's roof led to water leaks and mold.

State officials, including Roth, inspected Monson's home after FOX 11 first aired its report. Procedures with the state program were changed. Legislation on zoning related to Monson's situation was passed. And the community came forward to offer support for Monson, including donated materials, money and volunteers to build Monson a new home.

The donated flag now flies proudly outside Monson's home on a donated flagpole.
