OSHKOSH (WLUK) -- The gloves were on in Oshkosh Saturday to fight against Parkinson's Disease.

The Oshkosh Community YMCA held a day-long fundraiser at the 20th Avenue YMCA for its Rock Steady Boxing program.

Exercise is said to be medicine for those with Parkinson's. Boxing, in particular, can help with balance and core strength.

Deb Vercauteren, a member of the Oshkosh Y, who has Parkinson's, tried a Rock Steady Boxing class in Arizona, and was able to talk the Oshkosh Y into starting its own program.

“I just work out as much as I can and do as many activities as I can,” said Vercauteren. “That makes me happy and my progression I'm happy to say has been pretty slow.”

“We work with everybody, any shape, size, and progression,” said Rich Roehrick, the YMCA Health and Wellness Director.

The fundraiser beat its $2,500 goal. That money will help buy equipment for the Rock Steady classes, which meet five days a week.
