Health officials warn of toxic blue-green algae in Lake Winnebago
OSHKOSH (WLUK) -- The Winnebago County Health Department is warning of blue-green algae in Lake Winnebago.
The department posted on its Facebook page satellite images of the lake filtered to highlight a chemical found in the algae, which is also known as cyanobacteria.
Officials are advising people to avoid areas of the lake where they see algae, and to keep children and pets from swimming in the water, drinking it or eating dried algae.
The algae contains toxins that could potentially cause a range of symptoms, from rashes to organ damage, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
If you develop symptoms you believe can be traced to blue-green algae, contact your doctor or the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If your pet is experiencing symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
