GRESHAM (WLUK) – A piece of area history is up for sale.
The former Alexian Brothers Novitiate – a 181-acre property along the Red River – is listed for sale for $2 million by Gallagher Lake Country Real Estate, according to the company’s website.
The website describes the property this way:
“Over 4,000 feet of pristine frontage on the Red River complete with Class 3 rapids, waterfalls and stunning flat rock formations at the water's edge. Combine this with 181 acres of natural beauty (including 80+ acres of forest, 45 acres of tillable farmland) and a storied, impressive, abandoned mansion: the fortunate buyer will own a piece of history and have the opportunity to create an unparalleled future! Minutes from Shawano, you will feel like you are in a world of your own! This amazing property offers all manner of possibilities; personal or corporate retreat, possible hotel, campground, B&B, riverfront homesites or build your own dream home. Hike, paddle, swim, hunt, fish and enjoy nature...! Under 4 hours from Chicago, 2 1/2 hours from Milwaukee.”
The religious order vacated the property in 1972, with just a caretaker remaining. The Menominee Warrior Society seized the property for a month in 1975. Eventually, 39 people were arrested, according a history posted by the Alexian Brothers.
“Over the years, the property changed hands many times, never overcoming the controversy or reaching its full potential. In the summer of 2003, the novitiate addition was torn down and in 2005, the land was divided and offered for sale by real estate developers,” the history states.
