RIPON (WLUK) -- Continuing a half percent sales tax in Fond du Lac County was the topic of discussion Wednesday night at a public meeting in Ripon.
At the meeting, all county officials were supportive of the added sales tax.
The half percent county sales tax has been in effect since 2010.
During Wednesday night's meeting, officials discussed the impact the tax has had on improving roads.
County officials explained if the tax were to be eliminated, property taxes would have to increase to pay for road repairs.
Future plans also call for the tax to fund expanding the county jail.
One county official says the tax is necessary.
"We gotta make these investments, and as far as I'm concerned this is the most painless way to do it. And there's always going to be other capitol projects to come along as well," said Allen Buechel, Fond Du Lac County executive.
The half percent county tax is currently set to expire at the end of 2021.
The public is invited to offer feedback at another public hearing set for December 17 in Fond du Lac.
