STURGEON BAY (WLUK) - Door County might purchase a vacant Younkers building in Sturgeon Bay for an expansion of the Door County Historical Museum.
As happened with the rest of the Bon-Ton stores chain, the Sturgeon Bay Younkers Home Store, 56 N. 4th Avenue, store closed last year. This is a different building than the main department store on Third Avenue.
Door County Historical Museum Director Maggie Weir said the museum’s current storage space is inadequate and not handicapped accessible. The hope is to work with the library to create a genealogical and historical research facility that’s open to the public, she said.
She did not have an estimate on how much renovations would cost, or how long that process that might take.
According to the resolution under consideration, the county would purchase the property for $505,000.
“Whereas, County’s acquisition of the subject property serves governmental purposes within the powers of Door County, including expansion of the Door County Historical Museum,” the resolution states.
The Facilities & Parks committee will discuss the issue at its 9 a.m. meeting Friday. Supervisors are also expected to tour the building. The full County Board would consider the measure Jan. 22.
