FOND DU LAC COUNTY (WLUK) -- Officials say manure runoff has contaminated waterways and killed fish in areas of Fond du Lac County.

The affected creeks are in the Malone and Mt. Calvary areas.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it is posting warning signs for residents to avoid contact with the water at the canoe launch at County Road CCC and the Sheboygan River.

Dead fish, mainly minnows, were found in the Sheboygan River at County Road CCC and in an unnamed stream at several road crossings, including Ledge Road, Valley Road and County W.

The DNR learned Redtail Ridge Dairy applied manure to several fields last Friday through Monday. The area received heavy rains Monday and the manure ran off at least two fields, reaching nearby waterways.

The dairy farm has contacted a local septic pumper to collect the manure laden water.

DNR staff will continue to investigate and monitor the clean up.

Officials say they do not believe the runoff will affect wells due to deep clay soils in the area.
