DE PERE (WLUK) -- The city of De Pere will discuss implementing a $20 wheel tax at an upcoming meeting.

The De Pere Board of Public Works meeting is Monday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.

The public will have a chance to comment on the proposal during the meeting.

After the meeting, the board will make a recommendation to the city council.

The city previously approved the inclusion of the local vehicle registration fee in the adopted 2018 budget.

The estimated revenue collected from the fee is approximately $200,000 in 2018 and approximately $400,000 in subsequent years.

The revenue from the wheel tax would be used to fund sidewalk repairs and street construction projects.

The city council vote must be unanimous for it to be approved. If the vote is not unanimous, the ordinance must go back for a second reading. After that, the vote no longer needs to be unanimous.

Once it is approved by city council, the paperwork goes to the state and could be enacted within 90 days.
