(WLUK) -- Early birds get the worm, but in this case, early birds got to 'Build-A-Bear.'

Across the U.S., the UK and Canada, Build-A-Bear Workshop held its first "Pay Your Age Day" Thursday.

The day allows customers to pay their age or their child's age in dollar amounts to build a furry friend.

Due to the largely unexpected turnout, the company announced around 10:00 a.m. it couldn't accept any more customers to partake in the deal due to safety concerns.

On its website, it wrote:

"Per local authorities, we cannot accept additional Guests at our U.S. Build-A-Bear Workshop locations due to crowd and safety concerns. We have closed lines in our U.S. stores. We understand some of our Guests are disappointed and we will reach out directly as soon as possible."

Parents and children who got in line early enough say they waited in line for hours.

Customers at the Build-A-Bear store in Ashwaubenon and Grand Chute passed the time waiting with posts on social media:

According to officials at Bay Park Square Mall in Ashwaubenon, the line was cut off late Thursday morning. The store is handing out $15 vouchers to customers who were cut off in line.
