GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- In an effort to promote being active and encourage a healthy lifestyle, Bellin is hosting its annual run.

So far, 11,577 people have signed up for the Bellin Run.

"To be the 8th largest 10k in the country, when we have a population the size that we have is really something special," said Linda Maxwell, Bellin Run assistant race director.

She says the event is a celebration of health and fitness.

"All the training runs we have and the experts that we use within our sports medicine and our physical therapy, and our fitness centers... it really is, this is a culmination of all that training," Maxwell said.

The run's been around for a little over two decades.

"Running or any physical activity in general has so many health benefits. Not only does it it just help you stay in shape and help keep your heart healthy, but it can help prevent or control issues like diabetes and high cholesterol," said Dr. Rachael Vanden Langenberg with Bellin Health.

When Vanden Langenberg talks to her patients, she recommends 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

She's also a runner. Not only does she plan on participating in the Bellin Run, she also enjoys the event.

"It's just great to see people together doing something like this. Just the crowd and all the other runners seem to energize me a little bit more. I always run faster when I'm doing something like the Bellin than when I'm doing my own runs at home," Vanden Langenberg said.

As for the run, Bellin is introducing something new.

"We have the RaceJoy app that we're adding and the really fun thing about that is not only for our participants who can download the app and they sign up to be tracked and then it's GPS tracking that if they're carrying their phone, they'll hear every mile what their pace is and what their time is," Maxwell said.
