APPLETON (WLUK) -- A man was arrested after trying to run away from officers, prompting the lockdown of an Appleton school.

Police say around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, they tried to make contact with a 27-year-old man related to an on-going criminal investigation and probation warrant.

The man got away from officers in a vehicle.

As the man drove away, police say he struck multiple vehicles at the intersection of Southwood Drive and Valley Road.

He then got out of the vehicle and ran through the neighborhood of Stephen Foster Elementary at 305 W. Foster St., causing the school to go on a precautionary lockdown.

Some area streets were also closed to traffic during the search.

Around 11:30 a.m., the man was safely taken into custody in the 100 block of W. Calumet Street.

The school lockdown was lifted shortly after.
