1 killed, 2 injured when minivan driven by 15-year-old girl crashes
TOWN OF CENTERVILLE (WLUK) -- A 17-year-old boy was killed when a minivan being driven by a 15-year-old girl crashed in Manitowoc County overnight.
Sheriff's officials say around 1:15 a.m., a deputy saw the van speeding south on Hwy. LS near Hwy. X in the town of Centerville. The deputy tried to pull the van over, but it continued speeding. The driver lost control around a curve south of Hwy. X. The van went into the ditch on the west side of the road, flipped over and hit a tree.
The boy was thrown from the back seat of the van. He died at the scene.
The driver and a 14-year-old girl who was also in the van had to be rescued using the Jaws of Life. They were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.
All three teens are from Sheboygan. Their names have not been released.
Preliminary investigation shows the minivan was traveling more than 80 mph and was being driven without the owner's permission. Sheriff's officials say speed and inexperience were contributing factors in the crash.
Authorities say the driver did not have an instruction permit.
Several state and local agencies continue to investigate.
