MANITOWOC (WLUK) -- Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Hospital will no longer deliver babies after June 1.

The only hospital in the city of Manitowoc says it will end its obstetrics program, focusing on gynecology only. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network says the change is a result of Manitowoc County's aging population, with nearly 60% of the area's population age 40 or older.

"Our priority is always to provide safe, high-quality care that aligns with our community's needs," Holy Family Memorial interim president Tom Veeser, RN, said in a news release. "This has been a difficult and emotional decision, but one that ensures we are able to provide the best, safest level of care possible to our patients, long term."

The hospital says it is working with other health care providers in the region to transition care for pregnant women and those who may become pregnant.
