Senate approves license plate to raise money for families of fallen officers
(WLUK) -- The state senate has approved a bill designed to help families of police officers killed in the line of duty.
The bill would add a $25 fee to the Law Enforcement Memorial License Plate.
The current specialty plate, approved in 2013, was designed simply to raise awareness. It was not set up as a fundraising plate.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says there are currently more than 40 different specialty plates, including nearly two dozen fundraising plates.
Under the bill, the money generated by the Law Enforcement Memorial License Plate would be split between the national and state law enforcement officer's memorial funds. Lawmakers say the money would be used in Wisconsin.
The bill is now awaiting the governor's signature.
