WAUPACA (WLUK) -- Waupaca County Sheriff Tim Wilz is asking the state Department of Justice to review the sheriff's department as well as the district attorney's office in light of allegations that crime reports from the sheriff's office were improperly altered.
Last week, District Attorney Veronica Isherwood notified attorneys in the county that reports were altered to omit evidence that could have helped defendants.
In a statement Thursday, Wilz says the allegations stemmed from a single report in a trespassing case in 2020.
"This particular report was corrected to accurately reflect the intent and actions of the reporting officer in draft form before distribution to the District Attorney's office," the statement read. "The officer was made aware of the correction to the report and was in agreement with the correction."
Wilz says that, at the request of the DA's office, an outside agency previously reviewed the 2020 case and found "no willful deceit or any other improper purpose in changing the report."
No timeline was given for the investigation into the departments' operations.
