Authorities identify man, woman killed in Harrison

Robert Schmidt (Calumet Co. Jail)

HARRISON (WLUK) -- The man and woman killed in Harrison Tuesday night both died of gunshot wounds, and the man is believed to have shot himself, Calumet County sheriff's officials say.

The sheriff's department says a 911 call led deputies to a domestic disturbance at a home on Sweet Clover Drive just after 6 p.m. A deputy arriving on scene found Robert Schmidt, 49, in a dispute with Sara Schmidt, 38. As the deputy approached, he heard gunshots. The deputy confronted Robert Schmidt, who ran into the backyard. As more deputies arrived, they cornered Schmidt in the backyard and heard another gunshot. Deputies cordoned off the area and tried to communicate with Schmidt, but could not.

A SWAT team arrived and determined that Robert Schmidt had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sara Schmidt was found dead in her vehicle. She had at least one gunshot wound.

Scotty DeClark who saw what happened. "I was curious. I was like, 'What's going on,'" DeClark questioned.

The commotion also prompted DeClark to get out his cellphone and start recording.

"The cop starts to go across that back fence there. He turns off his flashlight. Right where he shines his light by that tree there, you hear a poof," DeClark said.

Autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Court records show the husband and wife's rocky relationship before their death.

In a criminal complaint filed on Dec. 31, Robert Schmidt's wife told deputies he tied her to the bed, put duct tape over her mouth, pointed a gun at her and sexually assaulted her.

Later in the complaint, Robert Schmidt admitted to officials he tied her to the bed for "approximately one to two hours," pointed a gun at her, taped her mouth, and had sex with her.

Hours before their death, Robert Schmidt appeared in court on Tuesday for sexual assault and kidnapping charges.

Court records also show Sara Schmidt filed for divorce last Friday. Court paperwork also said the couple have three children.
