FOND DU LAC CO. (WLUK) -- Holyland Food Pantry now has a new home in rural Fond Du Lac County.

The pantry held a ribbon cutting and open house for a new building on Kiel Road in Marytown.

A team of 118 volunteers works to serve more than 40 households per month on the east side of Lake Winnebago.

"Look forward to giving back to them," said Kevin Ditter Holyland Food Pantry Board President.

He says with the new building, Holyland Food Pantry can attract more households.

"We would actually enjoy more families and more households to be able to come forward. Basically, make sure that everyone in our community is getting what they need in support from us," said Ditter.

The community donates more than 60% of the pantry's items.

Dave Nickel is a volunteer and leads the distribution team.

He says it's common for people not to recognize hunger in rural areas.

"Back when we first started we didn't realize there was a need. People kinda said, well let's look into this and gradually we had more and more people come in and they were more comfortable with coming in," said Nickel.

Nickel says the clients leaving with heaps of food from Holyland Food Pantry are always thankful. Now, there is even more to celebrate.

"Compared to what we were in, this is like being in heaven. It has so much more room and we're able to better serve the clients and the volunteers," said Nickel.

The new facility has more storage for bulk commodities, handicapped accessibility, and private conferencing areas.

The site can now access federal and state government food programs for meat, produce, and dry goods.

Monetary donations may be sent to Holyland Food Pantry, P.O. Box 62, Malone, WI 53049.
