Amy’s Southern Style Mac ‘n Cheese


16 ounces macaroni, cooked al dente and drained

4 tablespoons butter, divided

5 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided

3 large eggs

1 teaspoon garlic salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

3 cups half and half or milk

1/2 cup crushed butter crackers or Italian breadcrumbs

2 teaspoons dried parsley (optional)


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Toss hot macaroni with 2 tablespoons butter. Beat eggs, garlic salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce together in a large bowl. Whisk in half and half. Place a half the macaroni in a 9 X 13 baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese on top. Repeat with another layer of macaroni and 1 1/2 cups of cheese. Pour egg mixture over macaroni and cheese. Stir a bit to coat pasta. Top with remaining 2 cups of cheese, crushed crackers or breadcrumbs and parsley. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter and drizzle over the top. Bake covered with foil for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden on top.
