The federal government has accepted a Kentucky man's bid of $48,500 to purchase the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal North Pierhead Lighthouse.Gordon Krist, of Paris, Kentucky, bought the 39-foot-tall facility through an auction handled by the federal government's General Services Administration, said GSA's Cat Langel.However, Krist told FOX 11 Friday that closing on the deal has not occured and he wouldn't comment on the purchase until that is completed.According to
a federal government website, three bidders submitted 21 bids in the last three days of the auction, driving the price up from $25,000 to the final bid of $48,500.Constructed in 1903, the 39-foot tall lighthouse consists of a cylindrical cast iron tower integrated with a rectangular fog signal building, and an attached catwalk. The United States Coast Guard will contine use the light as an aid to navigation.
