OSHKOSH (WLUK) -- After two straight days of one sturgeon being speared on the Lake Winnebago system, spearers were skunked on Thursday.

DNR sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs says he heard of some spearers taking portable shanties out onto the frozen lakes, but overall there were fewer spearers than usual on the ice. Several days of unseasonably warm weather has made for poor ice conditions.

So far, 847 sturgeon have been speared this season on lakes Winnebago, Butte des Morts, Winneconne and Poygan. The season ends on Sunday.
