Fond du Lac baseball team to be called the Dock Spiders
FOND DU LAC (WLUK) -- A creepy crawly that spins webs on piers along Lake Winnebago is the inspiration for a new baseball team's nickname.
Fond du Lac's entry in the Northwoods League will be called the Dock Spiders, team officials announced Monday. The name was chosen from among five finalists in a fan vote. Other finalists were Barn Owls, Lake Flies, Pipsqueaks and Shantymen.
“We are excited to open our inaugural season as the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders,” general manager Ryan Moede said in a news release. “The team logos turned out great and we think Fond du Lac will be proud to be the home of the Dock Spiders.”
A San Diego company developed the Dock Spiders primary and alternate logo.
Team merchandise is available for pre-purchase.
The Northwoods League is a summer league for college players. The players use wooden bats like professionals, as opposed to aluminum bats used in collegiate baseball. With the addition of Fond du Lac and Bismarck, North Dakota teams for 2017, nine of the league's 20 teams will be in Wisconsin, including the Green Bay Bullfrogs.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders are operated by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and will play home games at Marian University's Herr-Baker Field. Zac Charbonneau has been named manager for the inaugural 2017 season.
Excitement levels are running high in Fond du Lac.
As the city inches closer to having its own baseball team.
Ryan Moede, General Manager of the Fond Du Lac Dock Spiders, said, "That just gives kind of goose bumps when you see that."
Fond du Lac baseball, in partnership with the Timber Rattlers, announced Monday that the new team's name will be the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders.
Craig Molitor, president of the Fond du Lac Area Visitors' Bureau, said, "I think it's really cool. It's a fun name, Dock Spiders, this mysterious spider, this massive spider out there."
Now that the name is in place, Fond du Lac residents can look forward to celebrating their new team... and reaping the benefits of its location here.
Moede said, "We have high expectations. Basically, we're looking for community support, we're building multiple additions over to the stadium at Marian. We're hoping to fill the stands every game, put a great team on the field."
Molitor said, "It gives visitors things to do when they come here, and it's also a reason that visitors may come here specifically."
Fond du Lac's visitors' bureau says this new team should help bring outside money into the community.
"Easy to get here, lots of things to do in the community when they get here, in addition to baseball. Lots of things to eat here lots of places to stay," Molitor said.
And the city didn't need to build a new facility... just revamp an already existing baseball field at Marian university.
"It's really a matter of taking advantage of our existing infrastructure, and doing what we can with it."
Construction is underway at Marian university. The stadium will be ready for the dock spiders to start their first season in May of next year.
