With at least a share of the FRCC, Bay Port has more to accomplish Friday
SUAMICO (WLUK) -- Bay Port's enters Friday's regular season finale already having clinched at least a share of the Fox River Classic Conference, but there's more to accomplish for the Pirates.
Bay Port plays at Green Bay Preble in the Game Time Game of the Week with a chance to record back-to-back perfect regular seasons and likely ensure a No. 1 seed in the Division 1 playoffs.
"There's a lot riding at the game," said Bay Port coach Gary Westerman. "At the same point, I've never been one to put more stock in one than the other. We try to to go 1-0 every week.
'I know that's cliche, but really that's all we try to do. Having the No. 1 seed going into the playoffs, potentially if you continue to win you host the first three rounds.
"We were able to do that last year and certainly that's special. In the end, all that stuff is meaningless. It's just trying to beat a good Preble football team on Friday."
With a share of the conference Bay Port, ranked No. 2 in the FOX 11 Top 11, has become the first team to repeat a FRCC champs. At the start of the season it wasn't a lock the Pirates would do this, not with having to replace 18 starters from last year's team.
"Last year, we had probably roughly the same amount of people coming in to start as new starters," senior lineman Owen Trast said. "I think seeing last year how we did it, kind of shows maybe this year we can do the same thing."
Westerman had confidence in his team, but he might be a little surprised by the perfect season.
"Now I thought we could be good and it ended up being that way," Westerman said. "Give credit to the kids for sticking with it, believing it. And they got a little bit if swagger to them that I didn't necessarily anticipate, in a good way. The senior leadership has been really good."
And so has Bay Port.
