SUAMICO (WLUK) -- Bay Port's Cordell Tinch made official what has been known since November -- he's going to be a Gopher.

Wednesday, Tinch officially signed his national letter of intent to compete in track and field and football at Minnesota.

"It all feels good but there really isn't any relief until you finally put your name on that paper," Tinch said. "It finally feels great to be ready for it. It shows my work finally paid off."

Tinch said the plan for him his freshman season is to compete right away in track and field and redshirt in football. Before this school year started football didn't seem to be on the radar for Tinch in terms of getting a Division I scholarship but changed with a terrific senior season where he had 70 catches for 964 yards and nine touchdowns as a wide receiver.

Tinch, who won Division 1 state titles in the long and triple jumps as a junior and placed second in the high jump and 110-meter hurdles, has enjoyed a lot of great moments competing, but he said the most fun he has had is behind the scenes.

"A lot of the fun personally is when you're in practice days or in this workout or that workout, that the most fun," Tinch said. "That's where you see yourself grow the most."

He will continue to grow at Minnesota, a place he knew he was destined to attend after he visited.

"I just love the atmosphere," Tinch said. "When I got on the campus it felt like a second home already, even though it was the second college I've ever been to. I felt like I didn't need to see anything else."
