Laurent signs first LOI for the first collegiate women's wrestling program in Wisconsin
DENMARK (WLUK) - Denmark's Jayden Laurent signed a national letter of intent to join the first women's college wrestling team in the state of Wisconsin at Lakeland University.
Lakeland will begin competition next year in the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association, which is comprised of 42 schools ranging from the Division I level to the junior college ranks.
"I'm really super-excited," Laurent said. "This is something that I've wanted to do ever since I was little, and i'm so glad i can take the next step into doing it. I started way back when I was two years old and I would always do it with my cousins and we'd run around the mats and we'd have a good time.
"I wasn't really good, but I had so much fun doing it and as I got older this started to build and I kept getting better and better and then I started wrestling nationally and internationally and then I knew I wanted to do this in college; and I played a lot of high school sports but this is by far my favorite."
Laurent, a senior this year, is ranked No. 1 in the nation at 144 pounds. according to USA wrestling. and she is the first recruit to this brand new program.
Laurent currently plays for Denmark's basketball team.
