Denmark's fast start not enough as Vikings fall in state semifinal

MADISON (WLUK) -- After scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning Denmark was in seventh heaven in its Division 2 state softball semifinal against Mosinee.

However, with so much game left a seven-run lead wasn't necessarily safe and Mosinee made sure of that.

The Indians scored the game's final eight runs, including four on an inside-the-park grand slam, as the Indians shocked Denmark 8-7 at Goodman Diamond on Friday.

"We always had the opportunities but came up short," said Denmark senior Taylor Ullman, who had two hits and an RBI in the first inning. "It's a game, that's going to happen. You're not always going to get what you want.

"Sure, you're going to hope for a base hit but that's not always going to happen. So we did what we could and we just fell short."

It didn't appear Denmark (21-10) would fall short after the first inning. The Vikings had four hits and four walks in the inning as starter Sydni Gburek was pulled after two-thirds of an inning.

The rest of the game Denmark failed to score and recorded five hits. It had one final chance in the top of the seventh when Sophia Kinjerski led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch.

Abby Maricque ran for Kinjerski and reached third base with one out. However, she never advanced from there.

"It was a great start for us," Denmark coach Mike Vakselis said. "It got our confidence going, it got us relaxed a little bit, so as far as starting points that was great. We ended up 60 feet short, unfortunately."

Denmark entered the state tournament fresh off three straight one-run wins. Friday, the tables were turned and it didn't feel good.

Notwithstanding, it was a great season.

"I'm just really proud of my team for everything we've done," Ullman said. "Really sad to go. It's been a great time."
