FREEDOM (WLUK) -- Entering Tuesday's game at Freedom the Fox Valley Lutheran girls basketball team was stuck in a downward spiral.

It had lost its previous two games, so what transpired against a young and talented Irish team was a little bit of a surprise.

Spurred by Jenna Bruss' season-high 28-point effort the Foxes found a way to beat Freedom, 57-50, in double overtime in North Eastern Conference action.

"It's a huge win," Bruss said. "To come into this kind of atmosphere, it's one you will never forget. We played well as a team. It's a great win for us."

FVL (3-3, 2-1) was not expected to win the the NEC when the season tipped off, that label has been given to Luxemburg-Casco, Wrightstown and Freedom. However, Tuesday's win shows what one player can do for a team.

Bruss, the Winona State recruit, had the attention of Freedom drawing double teams, including late in the game when FVL was trying to rally. It didn't work as Bruss found ways for baskets and free throws.

"It was definitely nerve-wracking having two girls face-guard me," Bruss said.

"Teams key on her," FVL coach Rev. David Wenzel said. "We wanted the ball in her hands, she makes good things happen."

Tuesday's win could jump-start the Foxes, who have been inconsistent this season. It's early enough that they can believe they are conference title contenders, and with Bruss they have a shot.

Tuesday was proof.

"We came into tbis game under the radar so it was great to come out with the win," Bruss said. "We know we're capable of doing good things this year."

"We went up to Casco and got clobbered and our confidence was shaken and we struggled against New London," Wenzel said. "To come into Freedom against one of the top three teams in the conference gives us confidence."
